Vegetable tanned leather has not undergone any water-repellent treatment. In the case of the leather coming into contact with clean water, new leather does not suffer any permanent damage; however, if the liquid contains impurities (sugar, coffee, detergents) or acidic elements (for example rain that has been polluted by smog), once the water has evaporated, the various impurities therein contained will leave a stain. For this reason, you’ll always want to avoid water drying as drops, even if that mean simply spreading the water across the surface of the bag with your hand. Otherwise it is possible to mend the stained area following these suggestions:
Remove the heaviest dirt by using a soft cloth of a natural color. Do not press too hard on the leather.Using a soft sponge, spread the leather with a natural cream, applying it uniformly all over the leather and not only on the stain, in order to re-hydrate and protect the whole surface.
The more quickly you do this after contact with water, the more successful you will be.
If the leather in question is light color, your attention in following these directions should be even more careful, because a lighter leather is more likely to absorb a stain in an irregular manner.
As time goes on, while using your bag, you will notice that due to its special tanning method, its exposure to light, heat and the sun, any possible remaining traces of stains tend to decrease and you will admire that particular patina of “experience” that makes each Alise product unique and personal.
Our bags are 100% made in Italy, in the heart of Tuscany. They are made in the same factory where traditional luxury brands have made their product for years.
Vegetable tanning is an artisan tradition that the Tuscan tanneries have handed down from father to son for centuries, mixing antique recipes and state-of-the-art technology. is an organic method relying on natural vegetable tannins from bark or other plant tissues. Tannins from trees such as oak, chestnut, or mimosa are popular, but hundreds of tree types and other plants are known to have been used in this method of leather tanning that historians have dated back to 6000 BC.
We only source leather from tanneries that are members of The Genuine Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium.
